South Africa: Born-Frees in Hip Hop

Producer / Director / Cinematographer / Editor –

This Emmy-winning documentary explores the artist’s perspective on what the Born-Free generation means for the young republic of South Africa. As a story-telling medium, hip hop has often been used to communicate struggle.  So, what are the struggles that those born post-apartheid rap about?  Are they acknowledging the social ills that still exist in their country, or enjoying their status as a privileged generation and rhyming about frivolity?  Artists in Johannesburg’s underground hip hop scene–Navigator and the G.O.A.T. Gang–offer different perspectives on this question of freedom, and a vision of hope for the future.
